The 6 p.m. event will be the second in Garfield for Black History Month. Organizer Reggie Buggs said last year's gathering was a huge success with the library filled to capacity. They look forward to another big turnout this year when they speak about black history from before the year 1555, he said.
"We wanted to show some tributes for those who came before us in our generation," Buggs told Daily Voice. "There's a lot we don't know about our own history so that's what we'll be doing this year."
The discussion will cover the "untold journey" from Africa hundreds of years ago.
"Our theme this year is we're basically looking back to plan forward," fellow organizer Ruth Springer said. "Garfield is a very diverse town and there is a lot of history that can be shared."
There will be refreshments and a display set up in the library starting in February detailing the history, Springer said.
Late Garfield resident John P. Logan will also be honored for his work with civil rights issues, she said.
Buggs said they hope to continue holding Black History Month events in Garfield for years to come.
"The greatest lesson we learned last year was unity," he said. "I believe it's very important to bring families together and education them on the past."
